The Dallas Mavericks will enter the 2015-16 season with many new players, meaning they will most likely have some new statistical leaders. Monta Ellis and Tyson Chandler were instrumental in many of their wins last season, but after they both left in free agency, the Mavs will have to hope that their new players can step and attempt to replace them.

The Mavs will obviously not be as good as they were last season due to the fact that they just don’t have the type of star power or deep bench that they had in 2014-15. Also, the Western Conference got even tougher (if that was possible) with an improved Clippers team, a LaMarcus Aldridge-led Spurs team and a revamped Suns team.

That will ultimately create issues for the Mavs in terms of making the playoffs and staying afloat in the standings and it will likely mean they will be one of the teams, along with the Pelicans, Jazz and Kings, that are fighting for the eighth seed in the West.

Record and position in standings: 43-39, 9th in the West

Last season, for the first time in many, many years, the Mavs had a new leading scorer in Monta Ellis. He averaged 18.9 points per game which was 1.6 more than Dirk Nowitzki. Recently, Earl K. Sneed, a beat writer for the Dallas Mavericks, wrote that Nowitzki could get less minutes this year as he will be in his 18th season.

With that being the case, the door should be open for Chandler Parsons to take control of the Mavs offense.

Parsons got a bigger role last season until he was injured. Though the Mavs will have Deron Williams and Wesley Matthews on the team, Parsons has experience with Rick Carlisle‘s system which will give him the overall edge.

PPG Leader: Chandler Parsons – 18.5

Rebounding is one category in which the Mavs might be better this season. Last year, Tyson Chandler led the team with 11.5 rebounds per game. The next best was Nowitzki with 5.9. Though the Mavs lost Chandler, they gained Jeremy Evans, JaVale McGee, Samuel Dalembert and Zaza Pachulia, who will combine to help the Mavs grab more boards.

All four of those players combined for 16.7 rebounds per game last season but some had limited roles and some didn’t even play the whole season. On a stable Mavs team, they will each be able to thrive and contribute on the offensive and defensive end.

RPG Leader: Zaza Pachulia – 7.9

Assisting is another category the Mavs should improve in. Their top three assisters from last season (Rajon Rondo, Monta Ellis, Jameer Nelson) are all gone but Deron Williams and Wesley Matthews should be able to carry the load for the team.

Williams role is going to be more offensive-based because the Mavs love having guards that can play the two-man game with Dirk Nowitzki. Monta Ellis was a very effective passer in Dallas because Nowitzki opened up holes due to double-teaming.

Wesley Matthews is more of a wing player who likes to hang around the three-point arc so that will leave the primary ball-handling to Williams.

APG Leader: Deron Williams – 6.7

Overall, the Mavs will have plenty of new faces leading their major statistical categories. There most likely won’t be much improvement in each respective category, just new names because of a revamped team. That will lead to the loss of a Playoff spot due to the depth of the West but that is something to expect after a makeshift roster had to be put together because of the summer drama.
