Yahoo Sports was first to report that the New Orleans Pelicans have signed shooting guard Chris Douglas-Roberts — and his mop hairdo — to a two-year non guaranteed contract. The news interestingly comes not too long after it was reported that New Orleans had signed shooting guard Sean Kilpatrick to a two-year deal with partial guarantees.

Douglas-Roberts is expected to compete with the aforementioned Kirkpatrick and Bryce Dejean-Jones for a roster spot once training camp opens up at The Greenbriar on September 29th (That’s only two weeks away!).

I have seen rumblings throughout the Internet and social media that the Pelicans have also shown interest in free agent shooting guard Rasual Butler, who knocked down triples at an uncanny pace for the Washington Wizards last season. Butler could make more sense for the roster if the need is for another floor spacer, but given his age and reputation as a “meh” athlete, Douglas-Roberts, Kilpatrick and Dejean-Jones could prove to be better fits for both the interim and the future.

It is crazy to think that Douglas-Roberts was drafted in in 2008 and is already a 28 year-old NBA veteran who bounces from team to team. I remember watching him and Derrick Rose schooling other colleges at the University of Memphis and thinking he could maybe have a useful career as a versatile energy guy off the bench. He has definitely shown flashes of that at times, but inconsistency has stalled out his development.

You can’t blame the Pelicans for taking a flyer on Douglas-Roberts as the contract is completely non guaranteed. It will keep the competition up during training camp and there is still a possibility that Douglas-Roberts could have regained the shooting stroke that lead to a 39 percent mark from behind the arc with Charlotte in 2013-14.

Good move, Dell Demps.
