Philadelphia 76ers Sign PG Kendall Marshall to Multi-Year Deal
By Jake Hyman
The rotation at point guard just got deeper for the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers have signed former first-round pick and UNC product Kendall Marshall to a multi-year deal per Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski.
Philadelphia was rumored to have interest in the fourth-year point guard leading up to training camp and have added a new dynamic to a crowded trove of lead guards.
Marshall is the ideal analytical fit for a team lacking stability at the point and production. After lacking any tangible shooting trait coming out of North Carolina in 2012, Marshall has developed into one of the league’s most consistent threats from the outside at lead guard. He’s shot better than 39 percent from deep the past two seasons in Los Angeles and Milwaukee after a disappointing rookie season in Phoenix.
Marshall was heralded as one of the sharpest passers in the 2012 NBA Draft class and currently has a near-2.9 assists to every turnover per sports-reference.com. Philadelphia, last year, ranked No. 29 in turnovers from their point guards and can’t afford empty possessions.

He’s a positive fit with both Nerlens Noel and Jahlil Okafor down low as a crafty point who can knock down jumpers and open up the offense. Marshall excels in the pick-and-roll game. Per NBA stats, Marshall shot 52 percent in pick-and-roll situations last season in Milwaukee and has a history of finding ideal looks for teammates.
The minutes open for Marshall aren’t currently evident, as the Sixers currently have four other predominant point guards on the roster. Tony Wroten displayed keeper potential the past two seasons and Isaiah Canaan is locked up for the 2015-16 season despite struggling in the latter portion of last season.
Both Pierre Jackson and Scottie Wilbekin will be battling for a coveted spot on the roster as offseason signings. Marshall’s track record and upside trump the talents of other point guards on the roster and his ability to create plays favorably into a team whose two best talents are arguably in the frontcourt.
With a strong training camp and ability to boost an inept offense, Marshall could be next in line for serious minutes running the show for the Sixers this season.
