The New York Knicks selected Latvian power forward Kristaps Porzingis with the fourth pick in the NBA Draft on Thursday night.

After much discussion throughout the week on whether Phil Jackson would end up trading the pick, he went along with the European whose stock has risen during workouts.

With D’Angelo Russell going to the Lakers and Jahill Okafor going to Philadelphia, it was wide open as to what the Knicks would do, with Emmanuel Mudiay and Justise Winslow having been rumored to be interests for the Knicks, along with possible trades scenarios that would see them move down in the lottery.

The early suggestions are that the Knicks will keep hold of Porzingis, who stands 7’1″ and can provide outside shooting from the power forward position. It has been suggested he could become the best player from this draft class, although there are doubts over his ability to contribute from day one in the league.

The crowd reaction to Porzingis was not so positive, with a lot of local fans booing and many fans on camera clearly showed frustration and disappointment with the selection.

I personally think this is a good selection from Phil. He fills a hole that needed to be filled and should be able to fit into the triangle system. The big concern is his ability to contribute from day one, but I believe the Knicks have seen enough of him to suggest he can contribute.

This now opens up the question as to what Phil has planned for free agency. If a trade isn’t going to happen with the pick, a guard is a desperate need along with a center and it will be interesting to see who the Knicks pursue over the summer in light of this pick.
