If you haven’t heard by now, the Orlando Magic have hired Scott Skiles to be their new head coach. The belief now, will be that Skiles will be the man to bring this team back into the playoffs for the first time since the Dwight Howard era. As a former player with the Magic himself, this choice wasn’t entirely unsurprising, as his name had been mentioned for a number of weeks leading up to the announcement.

I myself felt there were advantages to hiring a guy with a proven track record of leading teams into the playoffs and playing to the team’s key strengths (In Orlando’s case, that would appear to be defense) while doing it. However, as with every hire like this, there were other candidates who could have been chosen to lead this team into a new chapter in their history. So let’s take a look at three guys who missed out, as well as what exactly Skiles’ key strengths will be for this team.
