What grade do the Sacramento Kings and Washington Wizards get for their point guard swap of Ramon Sessions and Andre Miller?

The Washington Wizards have been looking to make a minor trade for the past couple weeks, and they were able to pull that off this afternoon. Ramon Session was acquired from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for veteran point guard Andre Miller.

It is a very small trade, but both sides are very happy with what they are getting out of the deal. Washington truly believes that they have a legitimate chance to contend in the Eastern Conference playoffs, but they needed another offensive threat. Sessions will also fit their up-tempo style of basketball better than the aging Miller.

Sacramento has been very aggressive on the trade market as well over the past couple of years, and this trade was all about saving money for them.

That being said, let’s take a look at the grades that each team gets for this minor deal.

Washington Wizards

Washington is a very athletic basketball team that runs an up-tempo style of offense, and Miller simply doesn’t fit that anymore. He was a very nice veteran presence to have on the team, but the Wizards needed a better option as a backup point guard for John Wall.

Sessions is a perfect fit for what the Wizards were needing. He is more than capable of going off for 15-20 points on any given night, and he thrives in an up-tempo style of offense. During the 2014 season so far, Sessions has averaged 5.4 points, 2.7 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per game.

He hasn’t had a very consistent role with the Kings so far this season, but he is more than capable of being a quality backup for Washington. His offensive game was showcased during the 2013-14 season with the Milwaukee Bucks when he averaged 15.8 points and 4.8 assists per game. That is the type of impact he will have on the Wizards this season.

There is one more year on Sessions’ deal following this season, which is another reason that the Kings pulled the trigger on a trade. It will be very interesting to see what type of impact Sessions is able to make for the Wizards moving forward.

Sacramento Kings

George Karl was just hired as the Kings’ new head coach, and he immediately went out and got one of his favorite point guards. Miller and Karl have a great relationship from their time with the Denver Nuggets, and it is a very interesting trade.

More than likely, Miller will end up playing the rest of the season this year and then calling it a career and retiring. He is 38 years old, and his game is beginning to deteriorate a bit. Despite that fact, he is still a serviceable option as a backup, and is likely on Karl’s radar to join his coaching staff after his playing days are over.

Miller is a $4.6 million expiring deal for the Kings, and they got out of Sessions’ contract for next season. In the 51 games that Miller has played this season, he has averaged 3.6 points, 2.8 assist, and 1.5 rebounds per game.

Expect to see Miller take over the backup point guard role in Sacramento, but also be a player coach on the floor. That is the main reason that the Kings acquired him, along with the fact that he saves them money. Karl wanted a veteran presence like Miller in the locker room to help the team chemistry and teach the younger players.
