The Dallas Mavericks are 1-0 when Rajon Rondo wears his headband.

The story of Rondo’s headband has been told many times. It appeared to be an urban legend, one the likes of which I thought never existed.

It is a legend that is, indeed, true, and it is glorious.

Yes, that one win was against the Los Angeles Lakers, but we’re talking a phenomenon that can’t be explained. How can someone score a game-high 21 points in the highest-scoring offense in the league, when we know he can’t score at all?

It was amazing. The legend is real. And this is an indication that he needs to keep it on for every game for the rest of his life because it makes him amazing. Because of that, I am in love. This is a letter to Rajon Rondo’s headband.

Dear Rajon’s headband,

I have heard of you from afar, never knowing if you truly existed. It seems like every time I have a chance to see what you can truly do, I miss it.

The powers you possess are miraculous. I have no idea how in the world an accessory that can be stretched around the circumference of one’s head could wield such majestic powers and amazing gifts.

More from Hoops Habit

I don’t understand what it is. For three games, you were kept somewhere in isolation not being revealed to the world. Had we known these powers you possessed were truly magical, I would have begged for Rajon to show you off to the world.

After one game, you truly passed the test.

Who would’ve thought that Rondo would score a game-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists? Who would’ve thought Rondo would shoot 58 percent from the floor and even make a 3-pointer?

This is divine intervention. It’s the kind of divine intervention that you created that not only for Rajon himself, but it rubbed off on everyone else. Tyson Chandler caught everything that Rondo threw to him. Even Charlie Villanueva played better than Dirk Nowitzki on a night that should be meant to celebrate Dirk for moving to eighth on the all-time scoring list.

But think about it. Your powers rubbed off on everyone. Tyson caught lobs, Villanueva had four blocks and the Mavericks got a win over the Kobe-less Lakers. You don’t think you had anything to do with that?

Not only was that the case, but your majestic powers rubbed off on Villanueva, whose headband has not gone unnoticed. Soon, this entire Dallas Mavericks team will wear headbands and you will be the ringleader, which will bring joy and happiness to everyone, everywhere.

Take it for what it’s worth: This was the kind of game where Rajon had to release you to know if you were ready to come out of hiding. This was the kind of warmup game that needed to get your powers back. And you delivered, giving Rajon the best game of his short Dallas career.

What you provided was hope that Rajon could be the greatest offensive force the world has ever seen. Okay, maybe that’s a bit harsh, but you’re awesome, Rajon’s headband. You provide adults a reason to keep coming to Mavericks games. You provide children with the hope to where they can say, “You know what? I want to wear a headband. I want to be just like Rajon and be awesome.”

But like I said, you are one game in. You’ll need to double your powers on Sunday when the Mavericks take on the Oklahoma City Thunder. You’ll be (hopefully) on the head of the man who will be guarding Russell Westbrook. It will be a night unlike any other. But for one night, you have showed yourself to the world and your majestic beauty was showcased for the world to see.

You even have my colleagues praying you never go.

You’re giving hope to all involved, and it’s wonderful. Never leave, and never change. And I hope that if you, in fact, ever grow eyes and are able to read this (because, you are a headband and people probably think I’m serious by now and it’s funny), that you’ll appreciate what you’ve done for one night.

Keep being you, Rajon’s headband. You’re amazing.
