Detroit Pistons Prepare For Training Camp

With the clock continuing to count down to the return of the NBA season, the first glimpses of basketball are almost in sight. Like every other team around the league, the Detroit Pistons are preparing to enter training camp and start their pre-season schedule. That doesn’t mean that there are no more changes to be expected though, as the nature of training camp itself promotes change.

For guys who have gone through free agency without being picked up, or even for guys already on the roster but with non-guaranteed contracts, training camp offers them a last chance saloon to prove their worth. This year, the Detroit Pistons have added four non-guaranteed players to their roster for camp, yet they will undoubtedly have their work cut out for them.

It’s always tricky for camp invitees to make the cut when it comes to the roster proper, but with the Pistons already having 16 players on guaranteed contracts competing for only 15 spots, places are really at a premium this year. Still, stranger things have happened, and Stan Van Gundy will hope to create an environment which encourages competition from top to bottom.

As I wrote about in a piece the other day, general manager Jeff Bower has spoken of how there’s a need for the players to be competing with each other on a daily basis, and the expectation is that that will start in camp. Sure, that has the potential to ruffle some of Detroit’s more established players’ feathers, but it also creates opportunity.

The guys hoping to seize any opportunity are Hasheem Thabeet, Lorenzo Brown, Brian Cook and Josh Bostic. The four of them have varying levels of NBA experience, so let’s take a closer look at their games and what they could potentially bring to Detroit.
