Alonzo Gee Gets Cut

As training camp approaches, the Sacramento Kings continue to make tweaks to their roster. It has been a busy summer for the Kings, and the latest move from the team sees the release of Alonzo Gee in an attempt to create greater salary space. Gee didn’t even come close to seeing a minute of play in a Sacramento jersey, as this proved to be the latest chapter in the 27-year-old’s bizarre summer.

Having started the summer with the Cleveland Cavaliers where he spent his last four seasons, Gee almost got traded to the Charlotte Hornets, before eventually being moved to New Orleans, then Houston, and finally briefly stopping off in Sacramento.

The deal that led to the Florida native landing in California saw Jason Terry and a couple of second-round picks sent to the Rockets, with Scotty Hopson and Gee joining the Kings in return. With Hopson having already been waived, the decision to release Gee now renders that trade as purely a salary based decision.

What is the desperate need for Sacramento to shed salary though? With all of the key free agents now tied up, the Kings’ options of how to use salary space are a lot more limited than they would have been only a couple of months ago. Then in terms of play, it’s hard to see how Gee couldn’t have contributed for the Kings this season too.

Right now, the decision seems questionable, so let’s take a look at four reasons why the Kings could end up regretting their decision to waive Alonzo Gee.
