7) Preseason

The moves have been made, the rosters are just about set and it’s a chance to see old and new faces alike compete for the first time as a group. Yet there exists that underwhelming tell-me-when-it-starts-for-real-in-late-October-as-I-hit-the-beach-a-final-few-times-and-squeeze-out-that-last-remaining-bit-of-summer-like-weather sort of feeling about the preseason.

Outcomes are inconsequential and key roster spots aren’t open for competition as much as in the NFL preseason, for instance. That puts a limit on just how interesting it is to see your favorite team tune up for the regular season. And forget watching other teams before it counts for real. You might as well follow the only time major league baseball is that intriguing — during its September pennant races and October playoffs — before returning to see the NBA kick off the regular season.
