James Young, Freshman, Kentucky, 6-6, 213 lbs

2013-14 Collegiate Stat Line: 14.3 points, 40% field goals, 35% three-pointers, 4.3 rebounds, 70% free throws

The Skinny:

Only two Kentucky players have entered the 2014 NBA Draft, to the surprise of many. Julius Randle, a projected top overall selection and his sharpshooting teammate James Young are taking their talents to the next level. Young, the lesser of the two Wildcat prospects, struggled at times in his only season at college but featured great confidence in his outside shooting ability and developed more aggressiveness in his overall game as the season progressed. James Young is a solid NBA prospect, but there are some questions about him among team general managers and scouts.

Too many young players chasing the NBA money for my tastes. That’s why I want a full D-League as a minor leagues for the NBA.

Young really does have work to do. He’s the one Kentucky prospect I thought should definitely return but his inquiry came back as a mid-first round pick and he bolted. Surprisingly he declared before Randle, who’s a potential top 3 pick. He’ll probably be a decent bench player for a few years and eventually get a starting nod somewhere.
