According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN Los Angeles, head coach Mike D’Antoni has resigned from his position with the Los Angeles Lakers. This comes after two seasons of underwhelming results, including a franchise-record for losses in 2013-14.

This resulted in D’Antoni stepping down and the Lakers becoming the latest team to enter the search for a new head coach.

There’s something of a scarcity of recently proven or established coaches. This creates a very intriguing pool of options who could potentially symbolize the direction of the organization.

The question on every fans’ mind is simple and unavoidable: who are the best realistic options to be the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers?

Note: Coaches and players who are currently under contract in the NBA are not listed.

The fact that George Karl and Lionel Hollins are not employed by an NBA team continually baffles me. Dont think theres any chance Coach K leaves Duke at this point in his career but I guess ya just never know — money certainly talks.

Agreed on all fronts. I can somewhat Karl taking a year off after another first-round exit, but Hollins led Memphis to the best season in franchise history in both the regular season and playoffs… And was let go. Still baffled.

As for Coach K, I don’t expect him to leave Duke. But L.A. would be crazy to not at least gauge his interest with his window of opportunity to jump to the NBA closing.

Regardless of who the Lakers sign, this is going to be a crazy summer.

For whatever reason I don’t think the Lakers will hire Lionel Hollins. I actually feel LA will get their fourth or fifth choice lol. Coack K and Calipari won’t leave. I also doubt they get Kevin Ollie or Steve Kerr. They need someone like Rick Adelman or George Karl who pretty much is the same guy as D’Antoni….. More important than a coach is to get rid of Gasol and Nash and maybe even Kobe Bryant.
