During the regular season the San Antonio Spurs were the only NBA team to win at least 60 games. Sunday’s opponent, the Dallas Mavericks, happened to be the only team to make the Western Conference playoffs with less than 50 victories. Through 12 minutes Sunday it was obvious how the overall No. 1 seed San Antonio defeated No. 8 seed Dallas for the 10th straight time 90-85 to take a 1-0 series lead.
The Spurs, who defeated the Mavs earlier this year in their four meetings by an average of 11.5 points per game, were cruising on top 21-9 late during the first period before a 15-0 Dallas surge, capped by a Devin Harris 3, put the Mavericks ahead.
A frantic third quarter saw the lead change hands a half-dozen times and then in the fourth it appeared Dallas was going to steal Game 1. The Mavs led San Antonio 81-71 with 7:45 remaining.
